Vehicle / Track Technology

The interaction between wheel and rail has evolved over time and has a tried and tested history of success. But it also requires that engineers remain flexible and continually develop their working tools – which is precisely what the experts in IFB’s Vehicle/Track System Technology Division have been trained to do. Only then can the interaction of these two sub-systems result in a functioning whole.

In the area of vehicle and train design, IFB offers feasibility studies, performance specifications, verification calculations, and metrological analyses. The Institute also provides expert advice on diesel particle filter technology. Using multi-body system (MBS) simulations, IFB issues derailment safety certificates and provides recommendations for optimising track guidance. IFB also uses wheel and rail profile measurements to calculate and assess damage and wear on wheels and tracks so that propulsion systems can be adapted accordingly. Stress simulations of wheel-rail interaction can also be performed.

Both the IFB’s acceptance tests for track and switch components and its brake application investigations (brake calculations, system consultancy, damage assessments) play an important role in ensuring safe railway operation.
